At Long Last an Up Date!

It's hard to believe we are already in July of 2007 - the year is 1/2 over already!

Show News

In 2006 we began to show our dogs in UKC conformation events, here is the list of dogs we finished and or pointed toward their UKC CH and or started on their Grand CH 2006 & first half of 2007:

Dazzle, Banner and Lucy are UKC Champions, with 1 win each toward their Grand Championships. Lilly is a UKC Champion, BIS, with 2 wins toward her Grand Championship. Boo is a UKC Champion and Stella is pointed.

March of 2007 CuTTer went to his first AKC show, PRGRCO Independent Specialty - He was 3rd out of 6 in both regular and sweeps classes!

In April 2007 we also revisited the UCI forum and added International CH to Dazzle & Lilly's resumes! Lilly is co-owned and resides with Lynda Knowles

Pet Food Recall Debacle of 2007

As I am sure everyone is aware the first and second quarters of 2007 presented the pet community with a very scary situation. Many of the leading brands of pet foods were affected by contamination with melamine or cyanuric acid. This event was a huge awakening for the entire world and here at Brier too. While we feed primarily a whole raw diet to our adult dogs we do feed litters and puppies under the age of 1 kibble, so with that we have made a change in what we are feeding when it comes to prepared foods. We have chosen to feed Eagle Pack brand, and here is why:

First - Eagle was not at all affected by the recall. All Eagle Pack and Eagle Holistic Select products are produced at Eagle's small family operated plant where they only produce their own lines. The ingredients in all of Eagle's lines are human grade 1 ingredients (there are 5 grades of human consumables). The protein bases (meats) are meal which means the water has been extracted from the meat prior to adding it to the formula which means your pet is getting a good concentration of actual useable protein. All of the grains used are whole grain, no glutens or other forms of processed grains. Everything in the bag is "grown" in the US with the exception of the tourine and Glucosamine which are sourced from China but are pharmisutical grade. The vitamins and minerals in Eagle products are sequestered and have micro-minerals present in the dog food, as well as all of their products have pre and pro-biotics which aide in digestion.

And get this - When I contacted Eagle they insisted they meet with me personally! When I met with Jon Wooden and Pat Barnes within 2 days of contacting the company when I asked point blank: What does Eagle source from China without hesitation I was told pharmisutical grade tourine and Glucosamine only with out so much as a blink of an eye. I should note here too, is the manufacture of the food we had previously been feeding told me what they source from China was confidential...

So with that we have not looked back, we raised both the Bug and Flower litters on Eagle Pack and we have been feeding some of our other dogs their products as well. I can not be happier with this move... I highly suggest a look at this company to anyone reading this. Please also feel free to contact me for product, or information on the products. I do order Eagle on a regular basis and I can supply you with this food if you have a problem finding it in your area.

Clearance News:

CuTTer SteLLa and Bauer were all x-rayed for hips and elbows in March of 07 and all cleared. CuTTer and SteLLa have also had their eyes and hearts cleared. The rest of the "And" litter and the Patriotic litter should also be thinking about doing the above clearances... DJ Novotny was x-rayed in July and found to have grade 1 DJD in his left elbow but is doing well on some extra Glucosamine. His hips are OFA prelim good.

Sad News to Share

It is with a tear in my eye and ache in my heart that I share this photo show with you along with the following tribute to our dear Sprite who we miss dearly... Please enjoy the photo show, by clicking on the link here and again on "Sprite"

UCI Int'l CH Brier's Just Ducki CGC TDI

January 31, 1995 ~ June 17, 2007

It is with very heavy heart's that George and I said good-bye to our Sprite yesterday at age 12 1/2. Sprite lived a long and very healthy life, her passing was unexpected and sudden, which gave us both comfort because we feel she did not suffer. We suspect she had Hemangiosarcoma, as an ultrasound yesterday revealed a mass on her spleen and fluid in her abdomen. The only real sign that she was sick was she slowed down last week that she refused her breakfast Sunday morning then only ate a few bites of the canned food she was offered.

Reflecting back on the pages of her life makes me smile with an ache, but I know there will be happier smiles later - while I will miss her dearly, I do find solace in knowing she went quickly and that I was able to help her to a better place. Sprite was our first puppy born on the farm and she lived her entire life in Oregon which I have always felt is god's dog country and for that I will always be grateful. Sprite loved the farm, she went on walk abouts for hours, coming back with a smile, that would just melt you heart. She loved the occasional snow we get here and oh so enjoyed her trips to the beach, but more than anything she loved this farm and the blueberries she foraged on every summer including her last days. For some reason our berries have bloomed early this year, and for that I too am very thankful...

Life for Sprite was always Just Ducki and she lived up to her name until the end, what more can we ask of for a dog? We miss you Sprite and see you in your children, grand children, and great grand children, and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for what you shared with us your whole life... Rest easy our sweet Sprigly Wiggly...

Sprite

With Much Love,

Gina & George

Grooming - Training Tip to Share

Grooming: Golden Bond Golden Retriever Rescue will host their annual Picnic August 26th 2007. For more information click on the link above. I am fairly sure PRGRCO will have a grooming demo at the picnic along with Golden Olympics. If you are interested in getting to know the folks at Golden Bond or PRGRCO please come and consider looking to volunteering your skills moving forward with Golden Bond. As well consider joining PRGRCO - your local GRCA member club. Contact me for more information on PRGRCO membership...

Training tip - This may be old news but I think worth revisiting: Dog's who pull on leash are not fun to walk with. In the past there have not been very many safe or attractive alternatives to help with pulling but there is a new product on the market that really does do the trick!

No Pull Harness

Puppy News!

We had two litters this spring, the Bug litter and the Flower litter, both litters have gone home in the past few weeks and are doing wonderful! And we are planning a late summer breeding of Lucy to CuTTer! These will be winter go home puppies assuming all goes as planned. Maybe Christmas puppies...
